Brian in uniform - cropHello there. I am Sergeant First Class Brian “Mayor” Keaton, Sr., and I’m proud to welcome you to the Mayor’s Military Kids website. Allow me to take a moment and tell you why I’m so passionate about helping military families.

During my last tour of duty in Iraq, I experienced the shock of a Traumatic Brain Injury. I developed Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and began experiencing seizures and many other problems that come along with TBI and PTSD. I ended up in Walter Reed Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. Because of this, my children were suddenly uprooted from the comfort of their school. My wife struggled to homeschool them while at the same time being a caregiver to me. Seeing my wife have to care for me and then teach our three children, was too much for me to watch. I felt like a kid watching one woman do both our jobs. I felt helpless. Any less of a woman would have bailed on me, but not Kristen. She took charge, and with the Lord’s help, we made it through.

Because of my injuries, I had to face the fact that I would have to retire from the military. It wasn’t easy giving up the job I love, but I am determined to spend the rest of my life helping military families. People who are willing to give their lives for our way of life here in America should have opportunities available to them so that their children can succeed. There are unique educational challenges that come with military life, and I truly want to help military parents by taking some of that stress off them. I chose to partner with Renewanation because of their emphasis on education that promotes Judeo-Christian values. I’m passionate about my country and the values our nation was built upon.
